چکیده

Background Non-invasive quantification of myocardial iron content in patients with chronic anemia by Cardiac Magnetic Resonance (CMR) using T2* imaging sequences has significantly improved their clinical care. Measurement of myocardial iron content is traditionally performed on the interventricular septum of a single, mid-ventricular short axis image. Limited data exists to evaluate the reproducibility of myocardial T2* imaging in pediatric and young adult patients. Furthermore, there is no data in this patient group evaluating the heterogeneity of myocardial iron throughout the ventricular septum (apex versus mid versus basilar levels).

The Effect of Iron Replacement Therapy on Electrocardiographic Consequences in Pediatric Patients

Background Sudden cardiac death is an important problem, because the patients have no opportunity to receive medical service. Recently some electrocardiogram (ECG) parameters are used for predicting arrhythmias, including P wave duration for predicting atrial arrhythmias and corrected QT and T wave peak to end interval (Tp-e), for predicting ventricular arrhythmi...

Comparison of Magnetic Resonance Imaging T2 Results in Beta-Thalassemia Patients Treated by Deferasirox or Combination of Deferoxamine and Deferiprone

Background: Iron extra load is an anticipated and lethal consequence of chronic blood transfusion in major beta-thalassemia patients; therefore it is necessary to use an efficient iron chelator drug to stimulate the evacuation of the surplus iron from the body. This trial was performed to compare myocardial and hepatic magnetic resonance imaging T2 (MRI T2*) results of beta-thalassemia patients...

Assessment of Pancreatic Iron Overload in Transfusion Dependent Thalassemic Patients

Advances in the management of transfusion dependent thalassemic patients have improved the survival of these patients. The most important consequence of repeated and frequent transfusions is iron accumulation in vital organs. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive and valid technique for the estimation of iron stores. Despite multiple studies about cardiac and liver MRI T2*, the...

TRANSFUSION MEDICINE Evaluation of myocardial iron by magnetic resonance imaging during iron chelation therapy with deferrioxamine: indication of close relation between myocardial iron content and chelatable iron pool

Evaluation of myocardial iron during iron chelation therapy is not feasible by repeated endomyocardial biopsies owing to the heterogeneity of iron distribution and the risk of complications. Recently, we described a noninvasive method based on magnetic resonance imaging. Here, the method was used for repeated estimation of the myocardial iron content during iron chelation with deferrioxamine in...

Evaluation of the relationship between hepatic and cardiac iron overload with MRI T2* and carotid intima media thickness with Doppler ultrasound in beta thalassemia major patients

Background: Iron overload is caused early progression of atherosclerosis in beta thalassemia patients due to regular repeated blood transfusion. MRI T2* is a gold standard non-invasive method for detecting hepatic and cardiac iron overload. The aim of this study was the comparison of carotid intima media thickness (CIMT) in the patients and healthy control groups with Doppler ultrasound for ear...
